Italian language proficiency

It is mandatory for the University to verify the proficiency level in the Italian for Non-EU candidates who require entry visas to Italy for long-term stays intending to enroll in a Degree program in Italian language.

Candidates who demonstrate possession of a certificate of competence in Italian which is no lower than level C1 of the Council of Europe as issued under the CLIQ quality system, who upload this certification among the documents required for pre-enrolment on the UNIVERSITALY Portal, will be exempted from the verification of knowledge of the Italian language.

Candidates who do not hold any certification must take an Italian Language Proficiency Test remotely to complete the pre-enrolment procedure.
The results of the test will be sent to the email address of each candidate and the University will upload on the UNIVERSITALY portal the form “Modello D” that declares the language level.

For applicants who do not pass the B2-level Italian language test organized by the University, it is recommended to enroll in the Preparatory Programme of Italian Language and Culture (Foundation Course) for international students, organized directly by the University.

The extensive–intensive preparatory course in Italian language and culture is designed for international students who have not yet achieved a B2 level of language proficiency according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), which is required for admission to Italian universities.

The course aims to provide the linguistic and cultural tools necessary to navigate academic contexts in Italy, with a particular focus on vocabulary and communication, both of which are crucial elements for university studies.
The curriculum is designed to develop the four main language skills in an integrated way:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Listening comprehension
  • Written production
  • Oral production

At the end of the course, students are required to take a B2-level language certification exam.
The course is held in person at the Campus in Rome, from October to May, with a total of 70–80 hours per month. The total cost is €2,700.

Italian language proficiency test

In accordance with current regulations, international students who wish to enroll in a degree program taught in Italian must take a mandatory language proficiency test before applying for a visa. This test is designed to certify a minimum proficiency level of B2.

Students who already hold an Italian language proficiency certificate at level B2 or higher, issued within the CLIQ quality system (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità), are exempt from this requirement.

For further exemption cases, students are advised to consult the official ministerial guidelines outlined in paragraph 6, “Language Proficiency,” of the following circular:
